I have Spring Fever! It’s absolutely gorgeous out. The sun is shining. The birds are singing. Things are starting to bloom. The windows are open in my cute, little apartment and the cool breeze is gently blowing in through the rays of bright sunshine. And after a week of rainy, stormy dark weather it’s particularly amazing. It feels so, so good!
Running my errands today was actually a pleasure. An extra few moments waiting for a stoplight was an opportunity to soak in a little Vitamin D. I even took the long way to the grocery store just to walk on the sunny side of the street. I bought ice cream! And I officially switched to from red to white wine – I’m a seasonal drinker.
This time of year I almost get a feeling of butterflies in my stomach. It’s excitement somehow. It’s a rebirth of my soul after a long dark winter. It’s anticipation of summer – concerts in the park, walks along the lake, picnics under the stars and pulse raising rides on the back of a lovely man’s motorcycle. I feel joyful, optimistic and incredibly horny…
What is it with libido and seasons? I am a huge fan of sex generally but I always notice a distinct shift in my desire and drive this time of year. Coats are coming off. Bodies are being more exposed. Sidewalk cafes are opening up. Everyone is out and about. I mean, suddenly I find myself making eye contact a lot more. It seems like there are hot men everywhere. Everyone is checking everyone else out.
As with everything, I like to validate what I feel with some facts. I like to know it’s not just my 46-year-old, perimenopausal, hormonal mess of a body freaking out. I know that animals use Spring as Mating Season, but what about humans? Is it just me?
According to analysis in the New York Times, “the perfect time of year to conceive is when the sun shines for about 12 hours and the temperature hovers between 50 and 70 degrees Farenheit. For reasons that remain mysterious, such conditions somehow help stimulate either ovulation in women, a burst of sperm production in men or a combination of the two. In some regions of the world, the scientists say, people mating in the optimal fertility season have twice the chance of conceiving that they might have the rest of the year.”
Validation! The temperature right now is perfect. We just switched our clocks to have longer days and loads of sunlight. These are optimal conditions to “mate”. I am not alone! And while conception is not on my agenda, my biological self doesn’t comprehend that, hence the current state of my drive. Our bodies respond to the natural state of our biology more often than not.
Cheers to Spring! May you also feel the excitement and anticipation of the season. May you experience loads of pleasure in your life this season and always. May you feel the rays of sunshine on your face.
